ROADSIDE EMERGENCIES

My car won’t start. What should I do?

Star with the basics. Make sure your vehicle is in park. Check whether your battery appears to be connected. Look for any warning lights on your dash. If the vehicle still won’t start or you’re in an unsafe location, it might be time to call for roadside assistance.

What should I do if I get a flat tire?

If its safe, pull off the roadway and turn on your hazard lights. Only change the tire yourself if you’re in a safe location and have the proper tools. If you’re on a busy road or highway, call for a tow truck or roadside assistance.

What should I do if my vehicle over heats?

Pull over safely and turn the engine off. Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Allow the vehicle to cool and call for a tow truck or roadside assistance.

My battery died, what should I do?

A dead battery doesn’t always mean that the battery needs replaced. Depending on the cause, a boost might be enough to get you back on the road.

What should I do if I run out of gas or diesel?

Move your vehicle to a safe location if possible, turn your hazards on. Fuel delivery might be the most convenient choice to get you back on the road.

What do I do if I break down on the 401?

If it’s safe, move onto the right shoulder, turn on your hazard lights, and remain aware of surrounding traffic. Call for assistance. If you’re in the Tow Zone, call 511. Safety comes first!

Should I stay in my vehicle after a breakdown?

Every situation is different. If your vehicle is safely stopped away from traffic, remaining inside with your seatbelt fastened is the safest option. If remaining inside puts you in immediate danger, move to a safe location if you can.

TOWING

Can you tow my vehicle if it wont start?

Yes. Vehicles that wont start can be safely transported.

Can you tow a vehicle with locked wheels, or with the e-brake engaged?

Yes. Depending on the vehicle and the situation, equipment such as tow dollies or alternative recovery methods may be used to safely tow your vehicle.

Can you tow a vehicle that wont go into gear?

Yes. Mechanical or transmission issues don’t prevent a vehicle from being towed.

Can you tow an AWD (All-Wheel Drive) vehicle?

Yes. The towing method depends on the vehicle, its condition and the manufacturer recommendations. Flatbeds and tow dollies are commonly used where appropriate.

Can you tow and EV (Electric Vehicle)?

ONTARIO DRIVERS

Can I choose my own towing company?

Yes, in most situations. Your options depend on the circumstances, including whether emergency responders are managing the scene, or if your vehicle is being impounded. If you’re unsure, ask questions before authorizing any towing service.

Can I choose where my vehicle is towed to?

In many cases, you can request where your vehicle is taken, such as a repair facility, storage facility or your home. If any restrictions apply, they should and will be explained to you.

I’ve been in a collision. What should I do?

First, make sure everyone is safe and follow the directions of emergency responders if they are on scene. Exchange the required information with the other driver, and arrange for a tow truck if you don’t feel safe driving your vehicle or if your vehicle is not drivable.

How do I know if I need a tow truck?

If your vehicle is not drivable, and roadside assistance cannot solve the problem, towing is generally the next step.

How long does it take for a tow truck to arrive?

Arrival times vary depending on traffic, weather, your location and the current call volume. We do our best to arrive quickly and efficiently, and will provide an estimated time of arrival when you call.

What information should I have ready when I call?

If possible: Your location, the make and model of your vehicle, a brief description and reason for the tow, where you would like the vehicle towed to. If you don’t have all of that information, we will help you through it.

How much does towing cost?

Every tow is different, so the cost depends on factors such as the type of vehicle, the services required, the distance travelled, and any additional equipment or recovery work that might be necessary.

Before authorizing your tow, you should receive the towing company’s Maximum Rate Schedule. This outlines the maximum rates the company can charge for towing and vehicle storage, helping you understand the pricing before making a decision.

You should also receive a quote that explains the expected charges, including the towing service and any additional services and distance based charges.

Keep in mind that the Maximum Rate Schedule lists the highest rates a company may charge, it does not necessarily mean you will be charged those rates. It’s always a good idea to ask questions.

What is the Maximum Rate Schedule?

A Maximum Rate Schedule is a document that lists the highest rates a towing or vehicle storage operator can charge for their services. It is not necessarily the price you will pay, but rather the maximum permitted rate for those services. Reviewing the Rate Schedule, along with the quote provided will help you understand the services being offered and the charges you can expect. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask before you tow.
